Guidelines for a Multi-Denominational Prayer Gathering
God's blessing is promised to us when we come together and pray together in unity (Psalm 133). We recognize that as we join together across various denominational and cultural lines, we must seek the Lord as to how to bring edification to the whole body and not cause areas that might stumble a fellow brother or sister in Christ. Thus, as we come together and continue on in unity in Christ, we ask that you would prayerfully consider and follow the areas listed. Thank you and may God bless you richly in our time of prayer and praise.
1. Regarding worship: We desire to have you freely worship our Lord in a way that you are accustomed to, you are free to sit, stand, raise your hands, keep your hands down, kneel, dance (in the back of the room) or anything else that you feel led to. We only ask that you would be sensitive to your other brothers and sisters
2. Regarding Prayer: In order to facilitate unity and effectiveness in prayer, please observe the following guidelines:
If your natural prayer style is highly expressive, please exercise restraint in consideration to those whose style may be more subdued.
Be sensitive not to pray too long in your group. It is important that everyone has a chance to pray.
If you normally use "spiritual languages" in prayer, please do so only at a "whispering" level, so that others will not be distracted or possibly offended.
If someone else has already prayed about a given topic, feel free to add your own request on that topic. Often several persons in a group will get different insights regarding the same issue.
3. Regarding "Words" received from the Lord: We believe that the Lord does give promptings to His people to bring wisdom and direction to His people. Because this gathering represents a large cross section of the body of Christ, we ask that if you receive a word that you believe is for the corporate body to receive, please seek out the facilitators of the meeting and share the word with them. If they confirm the word, please refrain from using statements such as "Thus saith the Lord" and use statements that are more inclusive for greater unity, such as "I sense God saying to us" etc. The facilitator will share with you when it is appropriate to share the word corporately or if they will convey the word to the group.
4. Regarding conversation, we ask that you consider how you would speak about your church. We don't mind that you would talk about your experiences that you have had at your church, but we ask that you would refrain in talking about your church in a dishonoring way or in a way that would be highly inflating for your church. Our purpose in this is simply that we may all understand that we all are a part of the Body of Christ and connected to one another vs. the isolation and/or competition that the evil one would try to deceive us in.
Be kindly affectionate to one another with brotherly (and sisterly) love, in honor giving preference to one another. Romans 12:10
